Overview
We restructured the falklands.net website making it easier
to navigate and redesigned it to bring it up to date.
We donated this website redesign to the Falklands environmental
research unit in support of their work.
The Falklands environmental research unit carries out important
wildlife and environmental research and protection work to
ensure the continued survival of Falklands wildlife amidst
oil exploration and commercial fishing concerns in the area.
The unit is largely self funding, with most of its support
coming from its penguin adoption scheme, the sale of its book
and donations from its supporters.
The falklands.net site contains a wealth of in depth research,
wildlife information, illustrations and photographs detailing
the work of the unit and keeping its supporters up to date
with its latest research.
Constraints
The site is designed to be cross-browser compatible to reach
the widest possible audience whilst still retaining useful
and modern functionality for modern browsers.
It has been constructed to be server platform independent
(hence use of chilisoft ASP for database functionality for
easy portability to a Microsoft Server environment if required
in the future).

Technology
The site was designed for easy administration and utilises
cascading style sheets and server side includes for easy site-wide
updating.
Chillisoft ASP (a unix port of ASP) is utilised for the site
indexing and search facilities. Further database functions
for dealing with the units penguin adoption scheme are planned
for the near future. A little PHP is also used for form handling.
The site contains a wealth of information but the original
site's information structure was not immediately apparent.
We restructured the content and integrated a handy javascript
drop down menu to aid navigation and make the sites structure
more visible.
Testimonial
"The Environmental Research Unit is a wildlife conservation
organisation operating in the Falkland Islands. We recently
engaged the services of Ethical Design to revamp our web site
www.falklands.net, with excellent results.
Not only does the finished product look great, but Ethical
Design's approach throughout was prompt, professional and
helpful. In addition to having a better visual appearance,
our web site now hosts a lot of special features which we
didn't even know were possible until Ethical Designs took
on the work. I would thoroughly recommend Ethical Design to
anyone.", "The number of adoptions has increased
since you developed my site, so I think your work has paid
off in financial terms as well as style."
